Artificial intelligence denotes methods by which machines solve tasks that previously required human judgement — such as recognising patterns in large volumes of data or processing language. In cybersecurity, AI works in both directions: it improves detection and triage but at the same time empowers attackers. It is tool and threat in one.
History & facts. Long confined to research, AI reached broad practical application with powerful models for processing language and data. In defence it helps detect anomalies, reduce false alarms and relieve analysts in triaging large volumes of alerts. On the attacker side it lowers entry barriers — for instance with convincing phishing text or by accelerating the search for vulnerabilities.
Outlook & recommendation. AI shifts the boundary of what can be automated but does not replace human decision-making in the critical case. A sober expectation matters: AI is a lever for skilled teams, not a substitute for fundamentals such as visibility and processes. At the same time the regulatory dimension comes into view — the European Union (EU) AI Act, applicable in stages from 2025, sets requirements for certain fields of use.
