Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) is the formal cross-border legal assistance between states based on bilateral treaties or multilateral conventions — the classic but comparatively slow route for evidence production. Where possible, MLA within the European Union (EU) is complemented or replaced by the faster European Investigation Order (EIO).
