MDM

Mobile Device Management

Verwaltung mobiler Endgeräte

MDM denotes the central management of mobile devices — smartphones, tablets, sometimes laptops — via a management platform. It allows devices to be enrolled, security policies enforced, applications distributed and, in case of loss or theft, remotely locked or wiped. MDM today is usually part of a broader endpoint management (UEM).

History & facts. With the spread of smartphones in the enterprise and the „Bring Your Own Device“ trend, a control layer became necessary that enforces security without paralysing operations. MDM platforms therefore often separate work and private data, enforce encryption and screen locks and enable selective wiping of work data only. The function is tightly interlinked with identity and access management.

Outlook & recommendation. Under Network and Information Security Directive 2 (NIS2), control over endpoints is part of the required technical measures — an unmanaged company smartphone is a blind spot. At the same time MDM touches on sensitive data-protection questions, especially for privately used devices. A clear separation of data areas and a transparent policy balancing security and personal rights is the sensible approach.
