Malpedia
Malpedia — Malware Encyclopedia
Enzyklopädie für Schadsoftware
Malpedia is a curated, freely accessible knowledge base on malware families, operated at Fraunhofer FKIE. It bundles structured information, references and detection characteristics and thereby creates a common, consistent naming of malware. For analysis and threat intelligence it is a reliable reference work.
History & facts. A recurring problem in malware analysis is inconsistent naming: the same family often carries different names at different vendors. Malpedia counters this with a curated, referenced collection that assigns families unambiguously and links them with analyses, detection patterns (such as YARA — Pattern Matching for Malware (YARA) rules) and sources. Access is oriented towards the professional community and maintained with a focus on quality.
Outlook & recommendation. Clean, common naming is the precondition for linking insights across incidents — without it, analysts talk past one another. Malpedia is suited to classifying a family observed in one's own environment, looking up its typical characteristics and deriving concrete detection logic from them. It complements operational indicator sources with analytical depth.
