Defacement is the unauthorised alteration of the visible content of a website — attackers replace, for instance, the homepage with a message of their own. It is a loud, demonstrative attack aimed above all at visibility and reputational damage. Unlike stealthy break-ins, defacement is meant to be seen.
History & facts. Defacement is among the oldest forms of visible cyber-vandalism and often serves political messages (hacktivism), self-promotion or provocation. Technically it usually exploits known vulnerabilities in web applications, content management systems or weak credentials. As spectacular as the outward effect is — the actual break-in route is frequently banal and long known.
Outlook & recommendation. A defacement is a visible symptom pointing to an underlying vulnerability — and a warning sign that an attacker may have reached further than just the homepage. Prevention means: keep web applications and CMS up to date, strong credentials with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), separation of web from internal systems and integrity monitoring that immediately reports unauthorised changes. After an incident, not only the page is to be restored but the entire break-in route clarified forensically.
