Timeline Analysis

Forensische Zeitleisten-Analyse

Timeline analysis brings the countless timestamps of a system — from files, logs, registry entries and applications — into a common chronological order. From scattered individual traces, a coherent narrative of events thus emerges. It is one of the most effective methods for reconstructing the course of an incident.

History & facts. A system leaves timestamps in countless places: when a file was created, modified or last opened, when someone signed in, when a program ran. Individually these traces say little; merged into a continuous timeline, they show the „when“ and thus often also the „how“ of an attack. An extension that incorporates particularly many sources is called a super timeline.

Outlook & recommendation. The challenge lies in the volume and in the reliability of the time data: different time zones, inaccurate clocks and targeted manipulation (timestomping) can distort the picture. The analysis becomes valuable through the merging of several mutually independent sources — manipulated stamps then stand out through contradictions. Thus timeline analysis transforms raw data into a traceable, robust chronology of the incident.
