NIST is the United States of America (US) standards and technology agency whose publications set benchmarks well beyond the USA. In the security domain it operates the National Vulnerability Database (NVD), issues the widely noted Cybersecurity Framework and publishes the influential SP 800 series of standards. Its standards shape global security practice.
History & facts. NIST is not a pure cybersecurity authority but a broadly positioned standards institution; its security work nonetheless has global influence. The National Vulnerability Database (USA) (NVD) enriches Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) records with assessments and Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) mappings; the Cybersecurity Framework (in its revised version 2.0 from 2024) structures security work along a few core functions; the SP 800 series provides detailed technical requirements that serve internationally as a reference.
Outlook & recommendation. NIST methods combine well with European frameworks — the Cybersecurity Framework, for instance, as a structuring bracket and ISO/IEC 27001 — Information Security Management System (ISO 27001) as a certifiable management system. Those who know both worlds can map Network and Information Security Directive 2 (NIS2) requirements pragmatically onto an existing, proven structure rather than operating each framework in isolation.
