ANSSI is France's national cybersecurity agency. It is responsible for protecting governmental and critical information systems, issues security requirements and certifications and operates the national French Governmental Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-FR). Within Europe it is one of the formative, technically particularly influential agencies.
History & facts. ANSSI was founded in 2009 and placed under the Prime Minister, underlining its cross-sectoral role. It defines protection requirements for operators of particularly important systems, awards recognised product certifications and operates incident coordination via French Governmental Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-FR). France is thus regarded as one of the countries with a strongly centralised, enforcement-capable cybersecurity architecture.
Outlook & recommendation. In the wake of Network and Information Security Directive 2 (NIS2) and the European certification initiatives, close coordination between national authorities is growing in importance. For companies operating across borders, it is worth looking at ANSSI requirements even when the registered office is not in France — they are often a reference for demanding security requirements and noticeably influence the European debate.
