What is affected, what to do
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: algif_aead - Revert to operating out-of-place This mostly reverts commit 72548b093ee3 except for the copying of the associated data. There is no benefit in operating in-place in algif_aead since the source and destination come from different mappings.
The vulnerability is being actively exploited; treat it as a priority. Update Linux Kernel to version 5.10.254, Linux Kernel to version 5.15.204, Linux Kernel to version 6.1.170. Immediate actions, mitigation and detection rules are in the runbook below.

Priority (0–325)
The priority score is a consolidated metric that condenses several individual signals into a single, action-guiding ranking: technical severity (CVSS), exploitation likelihood (EPSS), known-exploited status (KEV) and the context of the affected asset. The aim is to answer the only truly important question in vulnerability management: what first?
Read in glossary- 235.44 Methodology
Exploit maturity
An exploit is code or a technique that specifically uses a concrete vulnerability to force unintended behaviour — such as executing code or escalating privileges. It is the tool that turns a theoretical flaw into a practical attack.

XIEM Effective CVSS
XIEM® is the tiered managed-security operating model from NEOSEC and a registered trademark of NEOSEC GmbH. It extends classic SIEM — the central collection, normalisation and correlation of security-relevant events — with endpoint forensics, network visibility and deception technology, and consolidates them into three building tiers: Sentry, Orchestrate and Command.
Read in glossary- 7.8 Methodology
CVSS v3
CVSS is the globally established, open standard for assessing the technical severity of a vulnerability on a scale from 0 to 10. It describes how easily a flaw can be exploited and what damage it can cause — but not how likely its actual exploitation is. CVSS and the complementary EPSS deliberately answer different questions.
Read in glossary- 7.8
EPSS score
The EPSS score is the absolute model output for an individual vulnerability: the estimated probability of real-world exploitation within the next 30 days, expressed as a value between 0 and 1 (i.e. 0 % to 100 %). A score of 0.42 means „the model estimates a 42 % chance of real-world exploitation within 30 days“.
Read in glossary- 98.1 %
- High — model estimates ≥ 50% chance of real-world exploitation within 30 days.
EPSS percentile
The EPSS percentile is the relative position of a vulnerability within all EPSS-scored CVEs, expressed as a value between 0 and 1. A percentile of 0.90 means „this CVE has a higher EPSS score than 90 % of all other scored CVEs“. Unlike the EPSS score, it is not a probability — but a positioning within a ranking.
Read in glossary- 99.91
- Critical — this CVE ranks in the top fifth of all CVEs scored today (rank ≥ 80%).
KEV status
The KEV catalogue is a list maintained by the US authority CISA of vulnerabilities for which active exploitation in the wild has been confirmed. It answers not the question „how severe?“ but „is it already being attacked?“ — thereby sharply prioritising patching.

Response and mitigation
Why act now?
Prioritisation rationale
This is a local privilege-escalation primitive. Any low-privileged user context can gain full control over the system's confidentiality, integrity and availability, with no user interaction required. That makes it a classic second-stage step after a web shell, stolen SSH credentials or a compromised container. Its exploitation likelihood is well above that of most CVEs, and while CISA does not flag ransomware use, root on Linux servers is a standard prerequisite for persistence, credential theft and lateral movement. Treat container hosts, CI runners and multi-user servers as critical (patch within 72 h); single-purpose appliances with no interactive users and AF_ALG blocked can follow the regular patch cycle.
Runbook step 1
Immediate response (0-24 h)
- Inventory kernels: Collect
uname -rfrom all Linux hosts via config management or EDR inventory and compare against the fixed upstream releases: 5.10.254, 5.15.204, 6.1.170, 6.6.137, 6.12.85, 6.18.22, 6.19.12, 7.0. Anything older in the 4.14 through 6.19 branches is in scope. - Deploy distribution kernels: RHEL, SUSE, Debian, Ubuntu and others backport the fix (revert of commit
72548b093ee3, "crypto: algif_aead - Revert to operating out-of-place"). A patch is available from the vendor — look up the exact package version in your distribution's advisory. Reboot afterwards, or apply a vendor livepatch (kpatch, Canonical Livepatch, SUSE Live Patching) where one is offered. - Patch by exposure: Start with hosts where untrusted code or users already run: container hosts and Kubernetes nodes, CI/CD runners, jump hosts, shared shell and HPC servers, and web servers that execute code (PHP, CGI).
- No-reboot stopgap: Where you can't patch yet, unload and block
algif_aead. Check whether it is loaded withlsmod | grep algif, runrmmod algif_aead, then addinstall algif_aead /bin/falseto/etc/modprobe.d/disable-algif-aead.conf. First confirm nothing legitimate uses AF_ALG, such as the OpenSSL afalg engine, iwdor some VPN stacks. - Triage for compromise: On exposed hosts that were reachable before patching, hunt for unexpected root processes, new SUID binaries, changes to
/etc/passwdor/etc/shadow, and newauthorized_keysor cron entries.
- Inventory kernels: Collect
Runbook step 2
Mitigation layers
- Kernel configuration: If AEAD user-space crypto is built in (
CONFIG_CRYPTO_USER_API_AEAD=y), the module blacklist does nothing; your only options are the patch or seccomp. Optionally setkernel.modules_disabled=1after boot so the module cannot be loaded on demand. - Container isolation (seccomp): Deny
socket()with address familyAF_ALG(value 38) in seccomp profiles. This covers KubernetesRuntimeDefaultor custom profiles via the Security Profiles Operator, as well as Docker and Podman. Rule shape:SCMP_ACT_ERRNOonsocketwhereargs[0] == 38. Unlike the blacklist, this works even when the module is built in. - systemd services: Add
RestrictAddressFamilies=AF_UNIX AF_INET AF_INET6to exposed service units. A hijacked service process then cannot open an AF_ALG socket. - IAM / least privilege: Minimise interactive shell access on servers, run service accounts with
nologin, and disable unused local accounts. Don't schedule untrusted workloads, such as third-party CI jobs or tenant containers, on unpatched kernels. - Network segmentation: The bug is local-only, so make the initial foothold harder. Allow SSH only via bastion or VPN, mount upload directories
noexec, and restrict server egress to an allowlist.
- Kernel configuration: If AEAD user-space crypto is built in (
Runbook step 3
Detection rules
- auditd – AF_ALG socket creation:
-a always,exit -F arch=b64 -S socket -F a0=38 -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=unset -k af_alg_socket(repeat forarch=b32). Hits from non-root users, web-server accounts (www-data,apache,nginx) or containers with no known AF_ALG use case are high-signal. - Module load events:
-a always,exit -F arch=b64 -S init_module,finit_module -k modload, plus journald/dmesg entries mentioningalgif_aead. An on-demand load on servers that never use AF_ALG is a strong indicator. SPL:index=linux sourcetype=linux_audit key=modload algif_aead. - Privilege change without a legitimate path: Use EDR process ancestry to flag a process with
uid!=0spawning a root shell (euid=0, e.g./bin/sh,bash) when nosudo,su,pkexecorsshdappears in the chain. Sigma shape:process_creation | user != root AND parent.user != root AND effective_user == root AND parent.image NOT IN (sudo, su, pkexec). - Kernel instability: Look for oopses,
general protection fault, KASAN orBUG:messages with stack traces throughcrypto_aead,aead_recvmsgoraf_algin dmesg or journald. Failed exploit attempts often leave these traces. - Falco/Tetragon (containers): Rule on
evt.type=socket and evt.arg.domain=AF_ALG and container.id!=host. Correlate with a subsequentsetuidor namespace change to catch container-escape attempts.
- auditd – AF_ALG socket creation:

Classification under NIS2 and CRA
Rule-based classification from exploitation status and severity. It does not replace a case-by-case assessment.
NIS2
NIS2 is EU Directive (EU) 2022/2555 to raise the level of cybersecurity across the Union. It substantially broadens obligations compared with the first NIS directive: more sectors, mandatory risk management, staged reporting duties and personal accountability of senior management.
Read in glossary- Actively exploited: treat the vulnerability as a priority in vulnerability handling under Art. 21(2)(e) NIS2. If it is exploited in your environment, check the reporting obligation under Art. 23 (early warning within 24 hours).
CRA
The CRA is EU Regulation (EU) 2024/2847 setting horizontal cybersecurity requirements for „products with digital elements“ — from industrial controllers and software to connected consumer devices. For the first time manufacturers must ensure security across the entire product lifecycle, handle vulnerabilities and provide security updates.
Read in glossary- Since 11.09.2026, manufacturers of affected products with digital elements must report actively exploited vulnerabilities under Art. 14 CRA, with an early warning within 24 hours via ENISA's single reporting platform.
ISO/IEC 27001
ISO/IEC 27001 is the internationally leading standard for an information security management system (ISMS). It describes a risk-based, process-oriented framework to systematically plan, implement, review and improve information security.
