    Severity
    Critical
    Priority (0–325)

The priority score is a consolidated metric that condenses several individual signals into a single, action-guiding ranking: technical severity (CVSS), exploitation likelihood (EPSS), known-exploited status (KEV) and the context of the affected asset. The aim is to answer the only truly important question in vulnerability management: what first?

    Exploit maturity

An exploit is code or a technique that specifically uses a concrete vulnerability to force unintended behaviour — such as executing code or escalating privileges. It is the tool that turns a theoretical flaw into a practical attack.

    XIEM Effective CVSS

XIEM® is the tiered managed-security operating model from NEOSEC and a registered trademark of NEOSEC GmbH. It extends classic SIEM — the central collection, normalisation and correlation of security-relevant events — with endpoint forensics, network visibility and deception technology, and consolidates them into three building tiers: Sentry, Orchestrate and Command.

    9.8 Methodology
    CVSS v3

CVSS is the globally established, open standard for assessing the technical severity of a vulnerability on a scale from 0 to 10. It describes how easily a flaw can be exploited and what damage it can cause — but not how likely its actual exploitation is. CVSS and the complementary EPSS deliberately answer different questions.

    EPSS percentile

The EPSS percentile is the relative position of a vulnerability within all EPSS-scored CVEs, expressed as a value between 0 and 1. A percentile of 0.90 means „this CVE has a higher EPSS score than 90 % of all other scored CVEs“. Unlike the EPSS score, it is not a probability — but a positioning within a ranking.

    KEV status

The KEV catalogue is a list maintained by the US authority CISA of vulnerabilities for which active exploitation in the wild has been confirmed. It answers not the question „how severe?“ but „is it already being attacked?“ — thereby sharply prioritising patching.

    Response and mitigation

    Why act now?

    Prioritisation rationale

This flaw is network-reachable without authentication or user interaction and yields full server compromise. A functional exploit is public, exploitation likelihood sits at the very top of the scale, and CISA flags known ransomware use. Attackers chain it with CVE-2025-53771 for mass exploitation of internet-facing SharePoint farms across government, energy and industrial targets. They steal machine keys to keep access after patching. Treat every externally reachable on-prem instance as critical and as potentially already compromised: patching without key rotation and a compromise hunt is not sufficient.

    1. Runbook step 1

      Immediate response (0-24 h)

      • Scope the exposure: Inventory every on-premises SharePoint Server instance (Subscription Edition, 2019, 2016), and prioritise anything reachable from the internet on 443/TCP or 80/TCP. SharePoint Online (Microsoft 365) is not affected.
      • Apply the security update: Microsoft has shipped updates that harden beyond the bypassed CVE-2025-49704 fix. The patch is available from the vendor — look up the KB number for each product version in the MSRC advisory for CVE-2025-53770. Deploy the CVE-2025-53771 updates in the same window, because the two are chained.
      • If you cannot patch today, enable AMSI: Turn on SharePoint AMSI integration (Full Mode where available) with Defender Antivirus or an AMSI-capable EDR on every SharePoint server. If that isn't possible, pull the servers off the internet until patched.
      • Rotate the ASP.NET machine keys: After patching or mitigating, rotate them using Update-SPMachineKey or the "Machine Key Rotation" timer job, then run iisreset.exe on every farm server. Stolen ValidationKeys otherwise let attackers forge signed malicious ViewState payloads, even against patched hosts.
      • Hunt before you close the ticket: Check ...\Web Server Extensions\16\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\ (and 15\) for unknown .aspx files, notably spinstall0.aspx and variants. On a hit, invoke incident response, isolate the server and preserve forensic images.
      • Regulatory clock: If compromise is confirmed, prepare the NIS2 early warning to your CSIRT/BSI within 24 h. Ransomware linkage makes this a likely significant incident.
    2. Runbook step 2

      Mitigation layers

      • Network segmentation: Do not expose SharePoint front-ends directly. Gate access through VPN, ZTNA or a pre-authenticating reverse proxy. Restrict egress from SharePoint servers to the destinations they actually need (default-deny outbound).
      • WAF/IPS: Block requests to /_layouts/15/ToolPane.aspx or /_layouts/16/ToolPane.aspx that carry DisplayMode=Edit or a Referer containing /_layouts/SignOut.aspx. This is the CVE-2025-53771 auth-bypass pattern. Also enable vendor Suricata/Snort signatures for "ToolShell" / CVE-2025-53770.
      • Endpoint hardening: Enforce AMSI integration and real-time protection. Enable the Defender for Endpoint ASR rules that block process creation from web server processes, and stop w3wp.exe from spawning cmd.exe, powershell.exe or csc.exe.
      • File integrity: Put FIM on TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS and web.config. Where operationally feasible, remove write access for the app pool identity on those paths.
      • IAM/least privilege: Farm and app pool service accounts must not hold domain admin rights. After any suspected compromise, rotate their passwords and every secret reachable from SharePoint (connection strings, stored credentials).
    3. Runbook step 3

      Detection rules

      • IIS access logs: Look for a POST to ToolPane.aspx with cs(Referer) set to /_layouts/SignOut.aspx, followed by a GET to /_layouts/15/spinstall0.aspx. SPL: index=iis cs_uri_stem="*ToolPane.aspx" cs_method=POST cs_Referer="*SignOut.aspx*"
      • Sysmon EID 1 / Windows EID 4688: Watch for the process chain w3wp.exe → cmd.exe → powershell.exe with -EncodedCommand or -enc. KQL: DeviceProcessEvents | where InitiatingProcessFileName =~ "w3wp.exe" and FileName in~ ("cmd.exe","powershell.exe") and ProcessCommandLine has_any ("-enc","EncodedCommand")
      • Sysmon EID 11: Alert when w3wp.exe or one of its children writes an .aspx file under \TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\. Sigma shape: Image|endswith: '\w3wp.exe' AND TargetFilename|contains: '\LAYOUTS\' AND TargetFilename|endswith: '.aspx'.
      • Key theft: Flag any reference to System.Web.Configuration.MachineKeySection, ValidationKey or DecryptionKey in PowerShell Script Block Logging (EID 4104) or in webshell responses.
      • AMSI/Defender alerts: Escalate immediately on detections such as "Exploit:Script/SuspSignoutReq" or "Trojan:Win32/HijackSharePointServer", and on any AMSI block raised in the context of w3wp.exe.
